Science in Year 5.

We have been exploring reversible and irreversible changes in materials.

After dissolving salt in water to make a solution, we left it a week to evaporate.

After a week we observed that the water had gone and it had left behind a residue of salt.

We learnt more about irreversible changes. We have talked about how eggs change when they are cooked and looked closely at some of the irreversible changes that take place in the kitchen. E.g burnt toast !

We mixed white vinegar with milk until it curdled and changed into a watery liquid and clumps of casein plastic. It gave off a very unpleasant smell !

Later we also mixed Bicarbonate of Soda with vinegar and filled up balloons with the Carbon Dioxide that came from the mixture. One of the balloons burst because so much gas was produced !

Science in Year 2

In the autumn we investigated which living creatures we could find in soil.

We looked very closely and found lots of dead and decaying matter and also lots of live worms.

Year 2 love finding out more about animals. We enjoyed researching different creatures from hot, cold, desert, forest and underwater habitats. We sorted all the living things into groups.

During our Materials topic we explored the different materials we could find around our school grounds. We found lots of examples of metal, wood, glass and plastic.
