Welcome to the Year 4 class page
Welcome to Year 4 !
We are a very happy class of 30 children - 15 girls and 15 boys !
Mrs Bates and Mr Lewcock are our class teachers. Mrs Russell is here with us every day to help with our work and she always keeps us all well-organised !
Spring Term
We celebrated our Class Saints Day - St Brigid with our class mass and we were allowed to wear our own clothes that day. In the afternoon we each designed a panel for a patchwork cloak to celebrate St Brigid. Archie Costello's mum offered to sew the panels together and produce some embroidery to complete our beautiful cloak. Archie enjoyed wearing the cloak so everybody could see the wonderful design.
Our fantastic Space week was Out of this World !
English
Autumn 2
In this half term, we are reading "Christophe's Story". This is a book about a Rwandan refugee who comes to live in England. During anti-bullying week, we looked at the character of Jeremy in the book who bullies Christophe when he first arrives at his new school.
Autumn 1
In this half term we looked at the use of determiners, speech marks and prepositions whilst writing our own version of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff".
Maths
Autumn 1
In Maths, we learnt about place value, Roman Numerals, negative numbers and rounding. We worked as a team to crack the code using our rounding skills.
GEOGRAPHY
Autumn 2
This half term we are looking at rivers. The children have made a list of questions they want to find the answers to and they have located rivers on a UK map.
Autumn 1
During the first half term, the children enjoyed a walk around Otley as part of our Geography topic. We also linked it to our English work as we wrote a non-chronological report about some of the landmarks of Otley.
PE
Autumn 1
This half term the children enjoyed taking part in different athletic events including running, jumping and throwing. The children enjoyed measuring how far they could jump and then seeing if they could improve the distance.
PSHCE
Our first PSHCE topic this year was "Democracy" so we were very lucky to welcome Mr Mulholland into our class, a former MP, to tell us what life is like at Parliament - we loved hearing stories of all the famous people he had met and some of the strange laws that have existed.
Topic Weeks
The first topic week of the year was - "Local Heroes". We enjoyed visits from Guide dogs, police, nurses and from Mrs Pratt and Mrs Condliffe who spoke to the school about a charity called "Mary's Meals".
Charity Work
In September, we all enjoyed raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support by making and eating cakes.
In the autumn term, the whole school brought in donations for the shoe box appeal which send Christmas presents to children around the world. Here is a photo of Year 4 putting them into Mrs Pratt's car on their first part of the journey!
